Migrating Your Operating System from HDD to SSD

When it comes to upgrading your computer, one of the most effective ways to boost the overall performance of your rig is to update your traditional, spinning platter from an HDD to an SSD. Anyone who has used an operating system running on an SSD recognises the immense performance benefits. Everything from boot times, software installation times and application load times are exponentially faster on an SSD. Most users fortunate enough to have their OS on an SSD received their computer that way. For users who own computers where the OS came preloaded on a hard drive, upgrading to an SSD can be a daunting task. Fortunately, Kanguru not only makes it easy to migrate from hard drives to more efficient solid state drives, but organisations can also resize and copy from a larger hard drive to a smaller drive if needed.

Migrating from a Hard Drive to a Solid State Drive

Previously there were only a handful options for retrofitting your computer’s HDD with an SSD. You could completely replace the HDD with an SSD and rebuild the whole thing from scratch, spending hours re-installing applications, copying over files and retrieving licenses for any paid software. Or you could purchase disk cloning software which requires a lengthy backup and restore process to clone an operating system from one drive to another. Another option would be to purchase an SSD that is the same or larger capacity than the HDD and make a sector level copy, which would be the most reliable option but can get very expensive, especially as you begin entering terabyte territory.

KanguruClone HD SATA Pro duplicators running firmware version 6.10 and later provide the ability to migrate hard drives to a solid state drive. This means that you can make an exact copy of your operating system running on an HDD and copy it to an SSD as long as the following two requirements are met:

  • The Master drive must be a Windows OS system drive, formatted NTFS or FAT32.
  • The used capacity on the Master drive must be smaller than the total capacity on the Target drive (e.g. if the Master drive is a 500GB HDD with 100GB of used space, then the Target
drive capacity must be greater than 100GB).

Just connect your drives, select Resize Copy and the duplicator will copy the contents from the HDD to the SSD at speeds up to 12GB/min. So, if you have computers running off of spinning platter HDDs that meet the above criteria, then there has never been a better time than now to upgrade your computers with SSDs using the convenience of the KanguruClone HD SATA Pro’s newly redesigned Resize Copy.

Resize Copy from Larger HDD to Smaller HDD

Sometimes you may also want to copy to a larger format hard drive to a smaller one for improved performance or other capacity needs. As long as the above requirements are met, the KanguruClone Pro Series of duplicators provide the ability to Resize and copy the contents from a larger capacity drive to a smaller capacity drive.
